Istanbul Design Collective at WantedDesign 2018

Curated by architects Füsun Eczacibasi and Koray Duman, the Istanbul Design Collective will showcase work by nine contemporary designers from Istanbul. In a living room setting, the showcase will feature products ranging from seating by Autoban and Merve Kahraman to textile work by Begum Cana Ozgur and glass work by Feleksan Onar and Feyz Design. Interested in the hybrid process and dialogue between the traditional artisans of Istanbul ateliers and tools applied by contemporary designers, the showcase aims to present a unique design process that shapes the work of contemporary designers from Turkey. Füsun Eczacibasi is notable for supporting contemporary art, artist, curators and researchers in Turkey and co-founder of SAHA Association. Koray Duman is the principal of Büro Koray Duman, a research and idea driven architectural practice in New York City. Sponsored by leading contemporary rug brand Stepevi and MNG Cargo. Media sponsor is The Guide Istanbul.

Outside the Box 2018

In collaboration with the Toronto Design Offsite Festival (January 15-21, 2018), WantedDesign will present the 7th edition of Outside the Box, an exhibition that creates a map of North American design. Each year, we identify a theme and a correspondent from 12 cities across the US and Canada who will curate a box of small design objects by designers and makers working in that location. The hope is that through seeing these pieces exhibited together, along with online companion information, one will gain some insight into the design scenes in these diverse cities. Once the exhibition leaves Toronto, it will move to WantedDesign Brooklyn at Industry City (May 17-21) during NYCxDESIGN, the city’s celebration of global design. The theme for 2018 is MATTER.

Discover more about each location and its local designers through the eyes of the twelve correspondents.

Each year, a group of industry professionals reviews the exhibited work to select a Best of Launch Pad prize. Since 2014, the Launch Pad has exhibited over 100 designers from dozens of countries and over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing the stories of some of the designers who have participated in years past and the manufacturers who’ve discovered them. As a reminder, the 2018 Launch Pad applications are due January 31, 2018. Apply here . (If you submitted your work to the Launch Pad prior to December 30, 2017, please re-apply due to a computer glitch.)
