Design Schools Workshop
Future Heirloom – Investigating the Modern Heirloom
Led by Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, California, US)
Presented with Core77
Every May, WantedDesign brings a group of students from International design schools together to participate in the WantedDesign Design Schools Workshop. Conceived as a collaborative activity rather than a competition, teams are composed of students from different schools and backgrounds. The 2018 edition is the largest one to date with seven participating schools from around the world. Participants include Art Center College of Design, Pratt Institute and Appalachian State University from the US, Centro from Mexico, Strate School of Design from France (with the support of French airline XL Airways), the Strzemiński Academy of Art Łódź from Poland and Aalto University from Finland.
The program is an important part of WantedDesign, and has been very successful in promoting the schools, fostering the creation of an international network of young designers, as well as in initiating partnerships between schools and manufacturers. The workshop format will be a very fast-paced, collaborative, energized process of ideation, exploration and creation. Teams will engage in hands-on exploration of techniques of manipulating material surface and process, to re-envision and redefine boundaries in design categories, and push how we may consider what and how we may extend our legacy. The final selected designs will present their concepts to a jury of prominent design professionals at WantedDesign Manhattan on May 22nd.
Art Center College of Design’s Professor of Environmental Design, James Meraz and Faculty Chiara Ferrari will lead the 2018 workshop.
