Outside the Box

After its successful debut during the 2015 Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TO DO), ‘Outside the Box’ 2.0 will be presented during NYCxDESIGN, part of WantedDesign Brooklyn.

Shipped across the country in Bankers boxes, the Toronto Design Offsite Festival & WantedDesign unpack, install, and present 10 distinct national and international showcases at Industry City, Brooklyn, from May 9-19, 2015. Working with local correspondents, this second installment of ‘Outside the Box’ features responses on the theme “Delicious design: l’art de la table” from selected cities across Canada and the U.S. Each box includes original works from local designers, reflecting the particular resources and makers of each area.

Displayed in an installation designed by Brooklyn based architect and founder of Plant-in city, Huy Bui, each box includes original works from local designers, reflecting the city and its particular resources and makers of each area. Canadian cities: Winnipeg, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver; U.S. cities: Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, Seattle.

A self-taught designer and woodworker with a background in engineering, Michael and his team of craftspeople have been producing fine furniture and objects with the region’s architects, designers, restauranteurs, etc. since 2003. He has had the pleasure of serving as president of the Guild of Austin Artisans, lecturing for the Japan-America Society, building his grandmother’s casket, and operating in the rich network of artisans and designers from the Austin area.

Steven Haulenbeek is a Chicago based industrial designer and artist working in the fields of furniture, lighting, accessories, and objects for the home. In 2007 he founded his design practice, Steven Haulenbeek Design Concepts Inc. with the interest in experimental, material, and process based design work. His work runs the gamut in scale, material and process but all exhibit a similar mastery of materials and an aesthetic simplicity through a hands-on, experimental prototyping style. Los Angeles Outside the Box: Natural Hospitality

After spending the past decade in San Francisco and New York, Erin Brown has returned to her native Southern California to live and work. She spent several years as the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Design Within Reach, where she worked with emerging and established designers to bring their stories and products to life in the company’s catalog, via social media, in the press and at live events across the country. Erin is currently working with designers and design-centric brands to hone their digital presence, social media, media relations and marketing strategy.

Together, they believe that every client, user and civic environment – regardless of budget – deserves an outcome that advances architecture. Recent firm recognitions include the Rice Design Alliance Spotlight Award, the RAIC Emerging Architectural Practice Award and the WAN 21 for 21 Award, an international prize whose aim is to highlight 21 architects who could be the leading lights of architecture in the 21st century.

Toronto Outside the BoxAppetite for Summer

The Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TO DO) is an annual city-wide platform for the exhibition and engagement of independent design in Toronto, showcasing unexpected prototypes, immersive installations, and unique programming. The not-for-profit festival produces one design-filled week of discovery every January. TO DO launched the first edition of the ‘Outside the Box’ project in January 2015.
