Couleur Exhibition at WantedDesign Brooklyn

Couleur is on view at WantedDesign Brooklyn on the Factor Floor, part of the IC Design Festival by WantedDesign during NYCxDesign. Couleur features teh work of three French designers, examining the use of color in their work. Pernelle Poyet, winner of the Hublot Design Prize, reflects on the role of color in her designs.

I started working with color in 2011, while I was an intern in a design studio specialized in exhibition design. I was working on a project the way I usually did: starting from the space’s blueprint, I divided the exhibition rooms in zones according to different functions, then made 3D models that I exported in contour drawings made of sharp black lines.

It’s only when it was time for making the project’s presentation pages that I finally wondered: «Which colors should I use ?» I realized I was absolutely incapable of choosing meaningful colors for this space that I had left completely white until then.

Zero Waste Bistro at WantedDesign Manhattan

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?
By Kaarina Gould, Finnish Cultural Institute in New York

We’re aiming at zero. Zero Waste.

Visuals Tsto; photography Nikola Tomevski

Think for a moment. What if all of our take-away cups were bio- degredable? What if all of our built environment was made of recyclable and recycled materials, perhaps incorporating some of the waste we’ve produced in the last decades? What if all of our everyday packaging was made of materials that contained no plastic? What if we only ever bought things that we love, things that last a life time? What if all of our restaurants were based on circular economy that resulted in no waste?

What if? The solutions are here. We just need to roll up our sleeves and make some change. Form new habits. Be radical. Zero Waste Bistro at WantedDesign Manhattan is just that, a four-day laboratory, exploring the ways we can make our planet healthy. A laboratory that’s also tasty and beautiful and fun.

Co-curated by Harri Koskinen and Linda Bergroth, and designed by Linda, the Zero Waste Bistro builds on themes of circular economy, new material innovations and sustainable design. We’ve invited the Helsinki-based Restaurant Nolla (nolla = zero) to bring their zero waste philosophy to New York: “An average restaurant produces over a ton of waste every week. We’re aiming at zero. Our philosophy is simple: Refuse, reduce, reuse, and as the last resource: recycle.” Nolla chefs Luka Balac, Carlos Henriques and Albert Franch Sunyer.

Rado Star Prize Finalists and Q&A

For 2018, NYCxDESIGN is pleased to have Swiss watchmaker, Rado, return as the Official Watch Sponsor of NYCxDESIGN. As part of its participation, Rado is hosting host the third stateside edition of the Rado Star Prize together with WantedDesign. This year’s theme focuses on the concept of “Design Inspired by Nature”- a theme that hopes to explore the influence nature can have on design. The winner and the other 9 finalists will be showcased at WantedDesign Manhattan. We welcome you to enjoy a Q&A with Rado’s CEO Matthias Breschan followed by an overview of the 2018 Rado Star Prize Finalists.

WantedDesign: Can you give us a little historic background about the Rado brand, and what best defines Rado today?
Matthias Breschan: The first collection was presented under the Rado name in 1957 and the brand has always had the pioneering vision of creating watches that look good for a lifetime. Having one eye on the future has always been important to Rado and has made the brand a driving force for bringing new and unconventional design and materials – including high-tech ceramic – into the watchmaking industry. It’s just one of the reasons Rado is known as the Master of Materials. Rado is best defined by its diverse and versatile collection of design-led watches that are designed to stand the test of time.
