Rado Star Prize U.S. 2017 Jury Winner

Design-driven Swiss watchmaker Rado served as the Official partner of NYCxDESIGN and WantedDesign. In 2017, Rado launched their second U.S. edition of the Rado Star Prize, which is held internationally to promote the work of young designers. With the Rado Star Prize U.S. 2017, Rado looked for innovative ideas on exploring the concept of “DESIGN IS OUR DNA: ITEMS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE” – a theme for the imaginative to create a product that shows a passion for the use of materials and design philosophy.

On May 19, at the opening of WantedDesign Manhattan, it was announced that Elisia Langdon, a recent graduate of the Industrial Design and Sustainability program at Pratt Institute, was the winner of the 2017 US Rado Star Prize for Kera, her modular storage system. Kera brings together the benefits of a sound-absorbing wall to improve working and domestic environments with the practicality of a storage system that can be adapted to grow within a variety of spaces. Thank you from WantedDesign

The WantedDesign team sends thanks to all our participants, supporters and to the more than 18,000 people who visited WantedDesign in Manhattan and Brooklyn during NYCxDESIGN. On May 16, we kicked off WantedDesign Brooklyn with an event at Industry City that welcomed thousands to celebrate the inspiring exhibitions from around the globe and the work of emerging student designers. Watch the VIDEO
WantedDesign Brooklyn was home to the Design Schools Workshop, a collaborative exercise with 20 students from design schools from the US, France, Finland and Mexico; the Transatlantic Creative Exchange in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy; Rockland Barbecue, an installation by Fort Makers and Visual Magnetics and more. For the first time at WantedDesign Manhattan, we partnered with Design Milk and Modenus for an engaging series of talks; the always inspiring Launch Pad featuring up-and-coming designers in the realm of lighting, furniture and objects; the Rado Star Prize; the third annual American Design Honors presented alongside Bernhardt Design, which was awarded to Studio Gorm; and WANTED Interiors with Sony Lifespace UX and designed by students from Pratt and the Rockwell Group. International design as presented from Mexico, Argentina, Barcelona, Brazil, France, the Netherlands and more.
Lastly, we closed out NYCxDESIGN with a festive celebration in the historic Seaport District where we now have two permanent retail locations. At the outposts of WantedDesign, we were so thrilled to connect with an international network (70% from the US and 30% from countries around the world) of designers, architects, retailers, manufacturers, media and those who simply love the inspiration from design. More…

The Best of Launch Pad 2017 are…

This year, our jury of design professionals selected “best of launch Pad” in Lighting and Furniture/Objects.

The winner of the Lighting category is Luvere Studio from Toronto. Their pieces provide indoor lighting for plants, solving a need they found throughout their travels and in the Canadian winter months. Thank you to our lighting jury, which consisted of Katie Stamaris, Director of Product Development, Design Within Reach, David Trubridge, Jack Schreur, Chief Executive Officer, FLOS USA and Jaime Derringer from Design Milk.

And the winner of the Furniture/Objects category is Studio Lani. Her multi-functional pieces derive their form and essence from an iconic West African musical instrument known as the Talking Drum. They’re hand-welded steel, turned wood and woven leather and function as side tables, storage and the top can function as a tray. The Furniture/Objects jury was comprised of Noah Schwarz, Director of Merchandising, Design Within Reach, Bettina Hermann, Director of Design and Product Management, Rolf Benz, Marva Griffin Wilshire, Founder of Salone del Mobile, Milano and Curator and International Press Director of SaloneSatellite.

This year, the designer who received the most online votes was Jaswig and their standing desk.

Congratulations to both of our Best of Launch Pad 2017 winners and thank you to the 35 participating designers and design studios who helped make this year’s Launch Pad such an inspiring and exciting exhibition. Thank you to our sponsors: Design Milk and Design Within Reach. Stay tuned for more photos of our 2017 Launch Pad.
