Studio Avni

Project

Fin Cloud light series are a sculptural take on biomorphism and tactile exploration of fin like modules. The ethereal light sculptures generated are reminiscent of scaly marine creatures such as sea anemone and jellyfishes displaying forms that have a physical and mathematical basis with bioluminescence characteristics.
The evolved light structures are biological analogues of these creatures, mimicking their bilateral geometries, not only by reflection but also by rotation of repeated elements around the central spine of the structure to create an organic bilateral composition.

Faceted Tactile Light Series – Bijoux Lights
The Faceted lamp is a tactile and sensory experience of using traditional materials such as brass, copper, German silver, stainless steel and PVC. Light permeates facets where they have been linked and have stretched due to tessellations revealing geometrical lines of construction. The Faceted dome lights are based on Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome. The design involves integrating material integrity and longevity using basic construction principles and applications to find new means of expression. The Faceted Chandelier draws from a modular veil structure, which allows for the construction of larger structure for public spaces.

Marigold pouf collection- ‘Gota na phool’
The Marigold Pouf collection is inspired from the marigold flowers from India that are used for rituals and other auspicious occasions for various ceremonies. The origami formation of petals is solely handcrafted for various patterns and effects. The result is a repetitive cell work that forms a vibrant 3D tactile pattern.

Studio

Studio Avni is a multidisciplinary design studio offering bespoke 3D textiles, furniture, lights and products using unconventional materials. Headed by Architect and Designer Avni, the studio explores a wide spectrum of design innovations through research and tactile manipulation of organic shapes and geometric patterns.
Avni Sejpal is a trained architect and a passionate designer, hailing from a textile family and educated at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London with a MA in Environmental Design (Majors in Furniture, Public Art and Graphics). She has over 8 years experience domestically and internationally in the industry, with stints in the world of Interiors, Furniture, Fashion and Graphic Design, she returned to Mumbai, India to open her own studio in 2011.

Avni works in an intuitive way with a variety of materials and techniques. Bold and vivid use of color, patterns and structural integrity is a constant feature in all her works. She is also curious with the idea of role reversal of materials wherein soft fabrics are so designed to have a structure and form and strong and hard materials such as metal are designed to have a fluid, ephemeral quality. Her style and work is an amalgamation of Architecture fundamentals and Textile curiosity.

Studio Avni specializes in producing large-scale sculptural textile, metal and perspex artworks for public spaces, corporate environments, exhibitions and private homes. These can be commissioned directly from the studio.
