Stefan Rurak
Stefan Rurak’s studio was established in 2011 with the vision that furniture can not only fulfill functional needs but also have the expressive power of fine art. Founded by the artist Stefan Rurak, his is a Brooklyn-based atelier that merges art, modern conceptual design and time-honored craftsmanship.
The results are evocative, one-of-a-kind, furniture and accessories that are built to span generations. Stefan Rurak specializes in bespoke services for private clients and releases collections in boutique limited editions. By collaborating with the distinctive and profound properties of materials such as leather, metals and wood, Stefan Rurak’s studio is able to craft furniture that transcends utilitarian ends, and becomes art.
Stefan Rurak faked his own death on the French Riviera, renovated gilded-age hotels in Poland, and was questioned by the FBI over a misunderstood piece of performance art, all long before crafting furniture. It was Stefan’s fascination with Zen Buddhism, and the powerful parallels he found in the act of woodworking, that eventually drove him to apprentice under one of New York City’s most respected custom woodworkers.
