Jake Dyson
Jake Dyson and his team have joined Dyson to continue advancing the core lighting technology they have developed over the past ten years. Jake remains at the helm, while working with Dyson’s 2,000 engineers to drive future portfolios of technology.
Technology driven
First with his CSYS™ LED task light, and soon with the suspended Ariel™ LED light, Jake Dyson has developed core lighting technology to overcome the problems presented by current LEDs. LEDs are semiconductor chips that produce light, but also generate large amounts of heat. Over time, this damages the chip, the brightness diminishes, and color fades. Jake set out to overcome these problems.
Taking inspiration from the technology used in cooling satellite systems, Jake developed a heat pipe technology for LEDs. The heat created by the LEDs flows away from the chip, meaning the brightness, color and energy efficiency remains. It’s engineered to last up to 37 years.
About Jake Dyson
Jake studied product design at Central St Martins College of Art and Design. In 2004, he set up a small workshop in South West London, equipped with a mill and a lathe to produce his first commercial product – the Motorlight™ wall light. But it was LED technology that captured his interest, and with a team of two engineers, he has been developing solutions to the core issues associated with LEDs.
