Fabrica

Ana González and Hubert Schoba, both Architects, started FÁBRICA at the end of 2010.  FÁBRICA is a small multidisciplinary design studio located in a house, which dates from 1916, in the historical heart of Guatemala City. FÁBRICA witnesses the city every day’s life. Change in the city is huge and people living there have to react to it in an every day basis. FÁBRICA strives to freeze the intensity of the urban life in its designs. It is all about trying to discover how to use the abundance of situations, materials and ideas that are found everywhere in the city. Its main concern is the search of a Guatemalan contemporary identity. FÁBRICA’s work unites current manufacturing technologies, age-old craft techniques and unconventional materials such as horse reins and jute sacks for upholstery; tire tube for leather; marbles as a ball bearing system, etc..  Because the objects FÁBRICA makes need different skills and materials, a diversity of ethnic groups and craftsmanship are working together under one roof to create a new object in the hope it will capture Guatemala’s present-day’s spirit.
