Since its debut, WantedDesign always had the great ambition to build a unique design destination, where business meets culture. For that reason, its programs were always curated and developed having in mind that anyone in the design community could become involved and learn, meet, discuss, debate.

Success is measured in many different ways. An inspiring group of 5 prestigious design professionals will discuss their personal paths to success, sharing inspiring and thought-provoking accounts of how they “made it.”

How can collaboration between industrial designers and artisans open new opportunities and contribute to sustainable livelihoods? This panel discussion presents the experience of international residency program Hors Pistes whose young Swiss and French designers worked with local artisans in Burkina Faso; the Swiss government’s expertise in promoting craftsmanship in Burkina Faso through vocational training as well as Cooper Hewitt’s role in advancing the public understanding of international design. Patronage: Martin Dahinden, Ambassador of Switzerland to the USA. Welcome: André Schaller, Ambassador, Consul General of Switzerland in New York. Panelists: Dimitri Bähler, Swiss designer and participant in the Hors Pistes residency in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Amandine David, Co-founder of Hors Pistes; Andrea Lipps, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Nicolas Randin, Former Head of Swiss Cooperation Office in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, currently Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations. 11am-2:30pm: abc carpet & home Call for Vendor Submissions
In the Landing (Entrance 238 36th Street)
Visit buyers of abc carpet & home and their Senior Director of Design and Merchandising for an opportunity to submit your products to the retailer. Fill out an information form onsite and come prepared to spend 5 minutes with each buyer. If the item is small enough to be carried and presented, designers are encouraged to bring that item. If not, swatches, materials, pictures and look books will suffice. Callbacks will occur at abc Union Square on June 9. Register for WantedDesign Brooklyn to attend.
2:30-4pm: AIGA/NY Citizen Designer Now!

Join us for a panel discussion as AIGA presents its long standing initiative, Design for Democracy past, present and future activities, and addresses the opportunities and challenges designers face when emulating the democratic process through design and community work.
After the panel you’re invited to join us for the AIGA/NY Citizen Designer Now! public meet-up which will provide a space to meet and share resources. This event will offer an opportunity to match-make nonprofits looking for designers interested in donating their time towards civic and social issues. A presentation of the complete Honey Bar Kiosk program with artists, designers and local beekeepers with a special honey tasting to follow
Industry City Open Studios, 12pm to 6pm
Visitors will be able to tour the Industry City studios of nearly 100 painters, photographers, printmakers, sculptors, and video artists, among others. Open Studios provides a rare opportunity to talk with artists, see works in progress, and discover how each artist has customized a studio space to fit the demands of his or her artistic practice.
Sunday, May 21
2:30pm-4:00pm: Mushroom Mycelium Grow It Yourself Workshop
What will the future of design look like and how are biomaterials shaping our interiors?
Ecovative, a leading biomaterials company growing high performance, premium, award-winning products that are grown using its Mushroom® Materials will team with Danielle Trofe, a Brooklyn-based designer, to discuss their most recent collaborative project using mushroom mycelium. Enjoy a unique conversation about how growing goods may begin to shift our future relationships with interior objects and the built environment.
Following the talk, stay for a hands-on Grow It Yourself workshop that demonstrates how Ecovative’s Mushroom®Materials can be used to create objects from sustainable biomaterials. Instructions on how to create custom forms and tooling, as well as tips and tricks on how to grow a successful GIY project, will be demonstrated. Participants will be invited to create their own planters using Ecovative’s GIY Mushroom® Materials. Participants can then leave with their souvenir planter and watch it grow safely at home. All ages welcome.
