The Design Market x WantedDesign is an innovative retail installation occupying the ground level of the Seaport Studios at 19 Fulton Street (map), offering a carefully curated selection of design objects, including furniture, lighting, home accessories, jewelry, and unique gifts.
During New York Textile Month, WantedDesign welcomes at Seaport Studios, on the second floor of the Design Market, a series of textile presentations and workshops.

ELODIE BLANCHARD: Windows Installation “GROWING TREE”
Elodie Blanchard Studio created a site-specific installation of recycled fabric trees for WantedDesign Brooklyn at Industry City in May 2016. The materials used are primarily fabric scraps collected from her own studio, along with leftover fabric and production scraps donated by Araks and HBF Textiles.
The installation, occupying the main window of the Design Market, is to provide inspiration for our community to cultivate new ideas for how to reuse discarded clothing and textile waste.

LINDSAY DEGEN & FAB SCRAP: GARMENT CONSTRUCT OPENING, Sept9th from 6-8 PM
Together we knit, sew, embroider, embellish, construct, pattern-make-drape, and create any garment. Nine textile artists/designers got together to build a sculpture full of garment parts, zippers sleeves, legs, socks and skirt shown in 8 teirs as models wearing clothes made from the same materials study the form. Do the models make the clothes or do the makers make the clothes? And does anyone know the makers?

LIZ COLLINS presents FRINGE. Opening on Sept 15th, from 5-7pm
A one week showing of Liz Collins’ fringe paintings, her newest art works made with woven textiles, knit cord and plexiglass. Yarn functions as paint in these large hanging and suspended pieces, creating image, pattern and texture that is activated by light and air.
Liz Collins is an artist who has been working across art, design, fashion, installation, and performance for more than two decades, carrying her aesthetic language of duality throughout her various bodies of work. Employing a range of natural to synthetic materials, incorporating vivid colors, dynamic patterns, emphasizing textures and inventive structures, Collins enjoys pushing the limits and doing the unexpected across the spectrum of textile media. She has had solo exhibitions at the Tang Museum at Skidmore, College, Saratoga Springs, NY; Heller Gallery, New York, NY; the Textile Arts Center, New York, NY; AMP Gallery, Provincetown, MA; AS220 in Providence, RI; and at the Knoxville Museum of Art, Knoxville, TN. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, New York, NY; and the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI among others.

Show up anytime between 3 to 5pm wearing something you can get dirty on. You will learn basic shibori & itajime technique and dye one bandana in Japanese fermenting “sukumo” indigo vat. Each session takes 30 min per person. All material and tools will be provided (no bring-in items).

This is a rare opportunity to learn sashiko stitching technique from the master Atsushi Futatsuya, the third generation of a surviving sashiko family in Gifu prefecture, Japan. The workshop comes with a complete kit of sashiko needles, a sashiko thimble, a skein of white sashiko thread, and fabric with traditional Asano-ha patterns printed on. You will learn basic sashiko stitching, embroidery techniques and go home with a fabric large enough to make a tote bag, placemat, patchworking, or your own project after the workshop.

Visual Magnetics is joined by designer Ellen Van Dusen in an interactive celebration of Textile Month at Seaport Studio’s Design Market.
Visual Magnetics will launch a line of custom magnetic wallpaper designed by Dusen Dusen, allowing visitors to engage with the movable textile designs first-hand. The wallcovering company will also host a viewing of their video exploration of innovation in the textile industry, featuring NYC-based designers.
Dusen Dusen has garnered a cult following for a bold use of abstract shapes and vibrant colors in her designs for apparel and home goods, which for an exciting interpretation of Visual Magnetics’ Modulayer™ magnetic wallcoverings product.
