Elodie Blanchard Studio

Elodie Blanchard designs and produces textile installations and custom curtains commissioned by architects for residential, institutional and corporate projects in New York City. She develops new concepts for each of them to respond to the specific needs of the client. Her aesthetic is modern and whimsical: she often hand sews organic flora inspired patterns and mixes unusual and colorful materials in geometric layouts to create voluminous, interesting surfaces in interior or exterior sites.

In 2014 she collaborated with HBF Textiles for her first line of upholstery fabric.As a native of Grenoble, France, already in her teens, her obsession with textile’s playful possibilities and primary use as technology for survival took form designing clothes and organizing fashion shows. After winning the public prize at the international festival of Hyéres for creating a collection of garments that transformed elegant jackets to a one, or for the adventurous, two-person tent, she was invited to sell her eponymous clothing line at the famed French mail order company La Redoute at the age of 23.

While Blanchard holds degrees in sculpture from the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris and fashion from the Ecole des Arts appliqués Duperré it was at Cal Arts in Los Angeles that she started to work on a larger scale and in installation and performance settings with musicians and dancers. As recipient of the Colin-Lefrancq grant, she developed musical textiles and crafted entire costumes out of thousands of rubber bands for concerts and dance shows.

This intimate knowledge of material and fabrication lead to numerous collaborations with architects on specific projects. As a result she formed her Brooklyn-based design studio Elodie Blanchard Studio, enabling her to link her interests in textile and creative problem solving. She also designs and produces a small line of soft goods and ready-made home accessories sold in design stores. Blanchard’s work has been featured in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Fortune, Metropolitan Home, Interior Design, DWELL, Domino and ELLE Decoration among others. She taught at Parsons, at the New School for Design and lives with her husband Jonathan and their son Gaspard in Brooklyn, a bike ride away from her studio.
